Dry tap on bone marrow aspiration: a red flag

A dry tap obtained on bone marrow aspiration is considered a failure to aspirate particles. However, it often related an underlying pathology that hinders successful of hematopoietic cells. In this retrospective analysis, 2768 aspirates and trephine biopsies were reviewed. Of these, 223 patients with aspirations which yielded no particles (dry tap) included in the study. Patients whom adequate biopsy could not be excluded from The final diagnosis was made by studying correlating other ancillary investigations. studied, seen (8.0%) patients. 209 (93.7%) had while 14 (6.3%) due faulty technique. Hematological malignancies 164 (73.5%) patients, benign hematological disorders 33 (14.9%) 4% non-hematological disorders. Among malignancies, leukemia (acute chronic) commonest cause 40.3% Dry should serve as red flag for hematologist rather than failed procedure. most cases, indicates possibility pathology. Trephine always studied such cases.
